If you have polybutylene pipe that looks like the gray pipe in this picture it's a good idea to consider a re-pipe. In this case a quick repair was done with PEX to meet the needs of the homeowner but the long term solution of a re-pipe was recommended. Polybutylene is a form of plastic resin that was used widely to manufacture water supply piping from 1978 until 1995 due to low cost and easy installation. The issue with this type of pipe that is was prone to defects and issues leading to class action law suits and settlements.

This is an example of old copper pipe commonly found in older homes in Lee and Collier county. In this case there was a leak on one side which was repaired using PEX. A re-pipe was recommended as long term solution. If you have pipe in your home that is in this poor shape you should consider a re-pipe. The potential costs of a sizable leak make it worthwhile to address the problem before a disaster occurs.
